The Great Eastern Trail Association will hold it's regional summit at the Breaks Park on June 27-28, 2009. As the northernmost trail-head for the Pine Mountain Trail State Park, Elkhorn City is at a key point in the proposed Great Eastern Trail which will ultimately extend from the panhandle of Florida to the Finger Lakes Trail in upstate New York.
The focus of the summit will be a proposed hiking route from Elkhorn City into and through Buchanan County toward the Appalachian Trail near Burke's Garden Virginia. The Great Eastern Trail was originally proposed when the Appalachian Trail was conceived as a parallel system to follow. Nearly 90% of the route already exists, including the Pine Mountain Trail. The National Park Service is assisting in the effort, with the route to eventually have a similar national protection as the AT.
When in place, Elkhorn City will be a terminal point for two cross country adventure tourism routes: the north-south Great Eastern Hiking Trail and the east-west Transamerica Bicycle Route. In the spring and summer of 2008, over 600 bicycle riders passed through town.
